• Question: Chernobyl was quite a while a go now, how come we haven't seen any superheroes yet? What would be the most likely super power?

Unfortunately, the opposite really happened, with a lot of kids being born with birth-defects (here’s a link to a picture, it’s a little disturbing: ).

I don’t think there will be any superpowers, unfortunately a lot of people in the area when the disaster happened came down with cancer.

If I could have any superhero power it would definitely be to fly! what about you?

      Hey timrichards,

the superheros are among us!! Actually Chernoble is quite interesting, it was such a huge disaster everyone was expecting a HUGE number of deaths in the surrounding areas but this hasn’t happened. they now think that the effects of radiation have been overestimated. This is because a lot of the research on this was done in the aftermath of hiroshima and nagasaki. They created a graph that plotted deaths from radiation against amount of exposure and it looked like a straight line. Now we think that it actually looks more like a J…….that a little bit of radiation is a bit protective! If you take a rat for example and keep it in a lead lined box……so protected from all forms of radiation it will actually develop tumours! It’s thought that a little bit of radiation helps keep the DNA repair mechanisms in top shape….kind of like training!!
