• Question: Have genetic engineering always been successful on the first run OR is it always trial and error? If it had not been successful on the first time, do you feel any guilt?

In the worms we use, it can very often be trial and error, as sometimes the way you engineered the genes together doesn’t really work. I do sometimes feel bad, but not guilt, more frustration.

No, but I’ve done a lot of experiments unlikely to work – you never know unless you try!
