There’s a field of research called computer vision, that involves analysing and extracting information from images. The task here was to automatically identify the football players location in the video and to look the the behaviour of the players. You may have seen the Prozone analysis on the TV or in the papers? to get the statistics of how much the players have moved and at what speeds, and who passed to who. You can get this data by manually tracking players by watching the video and moving a mouse for each player. However, Computer vision approaches model the players and are able to find and locate players and track them through the game. Just like some cameras and mobile phones now have automatics face recognition systems built in.
